The Libertarian Party of Wisconsin and 2018 Results

John Keller | @keller4liberty

In 2016, with Gary Johnson as the Presidential nominee, the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin made key gains in several regions. Gary Johnson, with Bill Weld as his running mate, received nearly 4% of the vote (106,674). There were many crucial races in Wisconsin, such as Jordan Hansen winning 30% (7,682) of the vote in the 54th Assembly District and Andy Craig receiving 11% (32,183) of the vote in Congressional District Four. As a result, the Libertarian Party of Wisconsin made great gains in the state. High hopes were thus set for 2018, and the unexpectedly crucial race for governor.

At the top are still Bernie Sanders, Kamala Harris, and at the very top with 27%, Joe Biden.

Meet the 2020 Libertarian Candidates

Kevin Damato | @KevinCDamato

As the 2020 presidential election approaches, there is much talk about the boisterous and ever-growing democratic field. However, the 3rd largest American political party, the Libertarian Party, also has a primary ahead of them.

In 2016, former New Mexico Governor Gary Johnson was able to garner small doses of media attention. However, the 2020 libertarian candidates seem rather unknown. Information on the candidates is limited, but outlets like Chris Spangle’s “We Are Libertarians Network” have done their best through their presidential candidate and debate series hosted by Hodey Johns.

Note that this is not a conclusive list of all candidates. Rather this is a short description of the most prominent figures who have announced their campaigns.

The Government Must Not Legalize Weed

Tu Lee | @71RepublicMedia

At some point, the Libertarian Party had a revelation. While classic Libertarians like Ron Paul had always run their platform as deeply ideological, the Libertarian Party could simply do away with the complicated thinking. They didn’t need the whole complicated thoughtful policy shtick; they could strip the party down to gays, guns, and weed. Gun owners’ votes were in the bag. All they had to do was promise to let people smoke up and the votes should pour in. Soon they rolled out their new face for these ideas; Gary Johnson and the Libertarian Party pumped out weed signs, weed hats, and weed bumper stickers. So did it work?
