Venezuelan rebel groups have turned increasingly violent as the socialist country continues to face difficulties regarding food supply, police overreach, and tyrannical policy.
A video was released in the early morning of August 6th depicting about 20 armed men wearing bulletproof vests and camouflage. One man in the video proudly announces that “we declare ourselves in legitimate rebellion, united more than ever with the valiant state of Venezuela, to disavow the murderous tyranny of Nicolás Maduro.”
The man goes on to discuss the many deaths that have occurred at anti government protests, citing examples such as Neomar Lander, Geraldine Moreno, and Juan Pablo Pernalete.
The spokesperson in the video has been identified as Captain Juan Carlos Caguaripano, a former National Guard officer turned rebel, who has been wanted by the government for upwards of 3 years.
The video was quickly followed up by an attack by rebels on a military base in the state of Carabobo, close to the country’s capital. The Venezuelan government claims the attack was repelled, though some attackers managed to steal weapons.
Socialist Party official Diosdado Cabello claimed that the base was “totally under control,” and that many people had been detained and arrested.
One military commander at the base during the attack stated that they were the victims of a “terrorist attack against peace.”
Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López claimed that the captured assailants professed connections to “extreme right wing” Venezuelan groups, with “connections to foreign governments.”
