Trump’s Latest Emergency Declaration is More Legislative Sidestepping

Garrett Summers | @g_summ300

President Trump was supposed to be the deal striking president that could get things done. Instead, he has sidestepped the deal-making process and used emergency declarations twice to get what he wants. After negotiating with House Democrats, President Trump signed an emergency declaration to boost funding for his border wall project. Now, the president has signed another emergency declaration in order to push an arms deal to Saudi Arabia. The president did sign into law the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, but this was with a Republican supermajority. So far, I have been disappointed in the president’s ability to govern conservatively and strike deals that shrink the size of the federal government or reduce the budget deficit.

President Trump recently addressed a group of media and political officials in the White House Rose Garden to unveil his new plan to reform the US immigration system. Many ambitious changes will be made to a system that hasn’t seen much reform in the past few decades. The President wishes to create a Border Security Fund that will be supported by fees from trade on the US-Mexico border. He went on to announce that over 400 miles of border wall should be finished by the end of 2020. President Trump also rolled out his plan to change the asylum and immigration systems.

On the Joe Rogan Experience, Joe Rogan and Brendan Schaub discussed the kinks with the launch of ESPN+ and UFC events. They also talked about how not everyone has a television that can connect to the internet, but it is apparent that the US is moving in that direction. They said it was likely that ESPN saw this too and decided to start their streaming service now so that the bugs would be worked out by the time the consumers are more able to access this kind of content. What they did not to elaborate on was what this meant for cable and satellite providers. Once the majority of Americans are able to access the internet via their televisions, it is possible for television stations to broadcast their own content without the cable middle man or the FCC.

Privatize Social Security

privatize social security
Garrett Summers | United States

The Federal government’s spending is out of control. The current US debt is $22 trillion and every year we add about another $1 trillion. Shrinking the size of the federal government means shrinking its power. Money is power, so decreasing the amount of money and economy the government controls should be the first place to start. Social Security is the number one expenditure of the federal government. Every year, about $1 trillion dollars of the budget goes towards Social Security. Privatizing Social Security would nearly remove the annual deficit. It would also return the power and responsibility of the individual to manage their own retirement.
