On Friday, the US House of Representatives Committee on Intelligence decided to release a GOP-authored memo regarding The Department of Justice, FISA, the FBI, and Donald Trump’s election.
The memo itself was put together by Devin Nunes (R-CA), who is the chairman of the Intelligence Committee. It alleges that the FBI abused its power to tilt the 2016 election against President Donald Trump.
The memo as a whole can be found here.
According to some, it will cause the downfall of the FBI and put Obama in jail. Others say it is handpicked quotes from the GOP that will lead to nothing.
One major part of the memo accused former spy Christopher Steele of working with the DNC and Hillary Clinton to show collusion with Russia and Trump. The memo reads as such:
“The “dossier” compiled by Christopher Steele (Steele dossier) on behalf of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Hillary Clinton campaign formed an essential part of the Carter Page FISA application. Steele was a longtime FBI source who was paid over $160,000 by the DNC and Clinton campaign, via the law firm Perkins Coie and research firm Fusion GPS, to obtain derogatory information on Donald Trump’s ties to Russia.”
Shortly after in the memo, it reads, “For example, in September 2016, Steele admitted to Ohr his feelings against then-candidate Trump when Steele said he “was desperate that Donald Trump not get elected and was passionate about him not, being president.” This clear evidence of Steele’s bias was recorded by Ohr at the time and subsequently in official FBI files—but not reflected in any of the Page FISA applications.”
Of course, multiple pundits and political figures took to respond to the memo. Along with the following responses, it is rumored that the Democrats could release a memo in rebuttal to this one.
Former FBI director James Comey responded with a tweet saying, “That’s it? Dishonest and misleading memo wrecked the House intel committee, destroyed trust with Intelligence Community, damaged the relationship with FISA court, and inexcusably exposed classified investigation of an American citizen. For what? DOJ & FBI must keep doing their jobs.”
Trump also sent out a tweet reading, “This memo totally vindicates “Trump” in probe. But the Russian Witch Hunt goes on and on. There was no Collusion and there was no Obstruction (the word now used because, after one year of looking endlessly and finding NOTHING, collusion is dead). This is an American disgrace!”
Rachel Maddow responded on her MSNBC show by laughing off the memo and mocking Republicans saying, “This thing?! This was two weeks of ‘This memo is going to end everything. This memo, have you heard about the memo? Hashtag: Release the memo! This memo will make Donald Trump innocent. This memo will put Robert Mueller in jail. It will abolish the FBI. The Justice Department will have to rename itself the Donald J. Trump & Family Private Security Task Force’.”
Only time will tell whether this memo will lead to the downfall of the FBI or lead to nothing.
