With a strong following on social media, former Alaskan Senator Mike Gravel recently hit the threshold of 65,000 donors to qualify for the July Democratic primary. Despite this, the odds of being invited to the debate are slim for Gravel. Gravel needs more support in the polls. However, many of the major polls are not including Gravel, which significantly hurts his chances.
How to Qualify
To qualify for the primary, the candidates must fulfill one of two criteria. They need to obtain 65,000 donors to their campaigns, with at least 200 donors in 20 different states or get at least 1 percent in three recognized polls. However, due to the ridiculous amount of candidates who have reached at least one threshold, not all of them will be invited due to a limited amount of space on the debate stage.
To decide who the DNC needs to invite, there has to be a tiebreak. Since a lot fewer candidates have been able to meet both criteria, the DNC will include them. As for the rest of the candidates who qualified, they are going to have to duke it out. The DNC chooses the rest of the candidates who have “a methodology that gives primacy to candidates meeting both thresholds, followed by the highest polling average, followed by the most unique donors.” This poses a severe problem for Mike Gravel.
Mike Gravel Screwed Over By the Polls
Many polls such as Fox or NBC do not even include an option for Mike Gravel in their polls. Since doing well in the polls is necessary, it would make sense to try and include every single candidate. However, this is not the case and is drowning out the voices of the smaller candidates, especially Mike Gravel.
Mike Gravel has reached the donation threshold and has a strong social media backing. The DNC needs to include him in the debates. He has no control over the polls and who they include. To make inclusion in polls be a criterion for qualifying to a debate is absurd. Especially since the accuracy of polling in the past has not been favorable. Wasn’t Hillary Clinton destroying Donald Trump in the polls? The recent Australian federal elections where the polls had a decisive victory for the Labour party who ended up losing. Due to personal biases of whoever makes the polls as well as their past errors, people should call their validity into question.
Interference From the Establishment
The establishment left does not want to include the anti-war and anti-establishment candidates as they seek to tear down the grip of the establishment. Mike Gravel easily hits 1% on the polls as proven by one poll here. The “1 percenters” who do make the polls are the centrist establishment candidates who have no candid ideas except to suck up to the establishment.
Mike Gravel knows the DNC is screwing him over. The teens who run his account tweeted, “Mike has qualified for the debates, but (with a raft of idiot centrists polling at 1 percent, and with a DNC that would love to keep him out of the public eye) they are actively trying to screw us. But we’ll fight back and make Mike’s voice heard. That’s our vow.”
It doesn’t matter if you agree or disagree with him. Mike Gravel is a refreshing voice in a time of a polarized political atmosphere brought on by the establishment. He has earned his right to the debate stage. The people of the United States deserve to hear his voice.
