Young, red-cheeked, cute, and female, Greta Thunberg checks all of the boxes. As a result, the blissfully ignorant have fallen in love with her and bought into her baseless, nonsensical statements. Yesterday morning, the 16-year-old Swedish climate activist filed a complaint with the United Nations against five of the world’s major economies, alleging they violated human rights by not taking adequate measures to halt climate change. Namely, she criticized France, Germany, Argentina, Brazil, and Turkey.
Greta Thunberg Speaks Out
“You have stolen my dreams and my childhood. People are suffering, dying. Entire ecosystems are collapsing. We are in the beginning of a mass extinction and all you can talk about is money and fairytales of eternal economic growth. How dare you.” – Greta Thunberg
In an over-dramatic, bombastic, and emotional speech in front of the United Nations, Thunberg cries, victimizes herself, and exaggerates the state of climate change. Thunberg asserts humanity is on the verge of mass extinction. She states that ecosystems are disappearing before our eyes. Moreover, she victimizes herself by saying the world stripped her dreams and childhood away.
However, the points she brings up are blatantly unfounded. They are fearmongering and detrimental to civil, honest discourse. Most problematic about Thunberg’s comments is that they exacerbate the belief in dangerous economic policy.
Virtue Signaling & Self-Victimization
It is outrageous, baseless, and nonsensical to state humanity is facing mass extinction. The same goes with the saying that many are suffering and dying in the status quo as a result of climate change. That premise is simply not true. There is little to no evidence to suggest humanity is facing an extinction crisis. There is no data to state people are dying and suffering in the status quo as a result of climate change; likewise, there has yet to be truth to the claim that eco-systems are collapsing. No, the Amazon is not an example. These statements are blatantly false. Thunberg either knows this or is ignorant of the actual state of climate change.
Greta Thunberg proceeds to state that someone, or something, stripped away her childhood and dreams. She told the UN assembly it is “not right” that she was not in school at the time of her speech. In doing so, she merely continues a trend of social irresponsibility and entitlement.
Thunberg, on her own accord, chose to skip school and embark on a two-week voyage to appear before the UN. No one made that choice for her. However, she continues to victimize herself and blame others. She holds the mentality that she has some great burden and is doing the world a favor by delivering her speech. Despite making this choice on her own, she acts as if she crucially needed to be there and does not want to be.
“This is all wrong. I shouldn’t be up here. I should be back in school. You all come to us young people for hope. How dare you.” – Greta Thunberg
Greta Thunberg Attacks the Free Market
The Swedish activist is either ignorant to her claims and economics or is simply dishonest and purposefully pushing an agenda bound to bring forth economic hardship. Despite Thunberg not directly calling for an end to the free market, it is definitely the premise she pushes when mentioning “action”. After all, she claims a 50% carbon emission reduction is not sufficient. There is no doubt that Thunberg supports drastic government regulation to halt climate change— especially considering she just sued five countries in the name of climate justice.
She specifically feeds the notion that world leaders are prioritizing economic growth over saving the world from “mass extinction”. Problematically, the free-market system the activist battles so hard actually fuels the amazing quality of life she experiences as a Swede. The boat she used to cross the Atlantic Ocean is a product of the free-market. The raw materials of the vessel had to be extracted, put together, designed, marketed, and sold; under the alternative system, central planning, the end product simply would not be as desirable. The building she spoke in and the microphone she used would suffer similar quality detriments. So would everything from her clothes to her food.

It is impossible for governments to halt humanity’s carbon emissions without drastically decreasing global quality of life. Vehicles, production of goods, farming, services, modern medicines, and a manifold of other assortments drastic to our quality of life crucially rely on the technology we have today to exist. The market is already working to remedy this, though, as the price for solar energy continues to plummet.
The Danger of Dishonesty
Greta Thunberg’s fearmongering, intentional or not, forms a mentality in her fellow youth that the world is ending and people are dying as we speak due to climate change. This continuous expounding leads a majority of the populace to want to take action and regulate the market immediately. Those individuals then apply said beliefs to the polls. In turn, a government comes to power that does not understand that their regulations will likely lead to great hardship.
The power of social media to widely broadcast misinformation is significant. It goes without a doubt that Thunberg’s speech will be all over social media this afternoon; this only furthers a lack of economic understanding.
Greta Thunberg is an emotional teenager on a tangent about humanity’s alleged impending doom. She presents no new insight, analysis, extension, or content. She repeats the mantra of every mainstream celebrity’s social media account. Although her journey of skipping school one year ago may have been her own idea, her unique thoughts eventually ceased. In their place lies a host of powerful elites using Thunberg’s style to further attack economic freedom.
