Over two million people have pledged on a now-viral Facebook event to storm Area 51 — a United States Air Force Military installation — in order to “see them aliens”. Officially referred to as “Groom Lake” or “Homey Airport”, the installation situated in the middle of the Nevada desert is shrouded in mystery. Conspiracy theories of what is kept at the military base span from extraterrestrial beings to advanced technology such as time travel. Such wild beliefs are what make Area 51 so famous and caused the post to go viral. Many who have joined the event are considering flying to Area 51.

Based on some supplementary posts, it’s pretty clear it was a meme designed to garner internet publicity. Boy, did it work. On Friday, the United States Air Force, via spokeswoman Laura McAndrews, reached out to those who have declared that they’re going, threatening violence against anyone who shows up at the compound.

At the McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas, there exists a highly classified airline with a fleet of passenger aircraft that the military owns. It commenced operations in 1972 and was operated by defense contractors that played a key role in the development of nuclear weapons. The airline currently operates out of a private terminal, and the public knows very little about it. They, however, unofficially refer to it as “Janet”. This is because “Janet” is the callsign that the pilots use to identify their aircraft over air traffic radio.
