In Tuesday night’s Democratic debate, presidential candidate Joe Biden made instant history. With a confused statement regarding the capital gains tax, the candidate forgot for a brief moment that he was running as a Democrat. The 78-year-old man firmly asserted that he would “eliminate the capital gains tax” in an exchange with competitors. Following the debate, Biden apologized, explaining that he thought for a moment that he was running for the Libertarian nomination.
The general election is still over a year away. We can’t trust presidential polls too much, especially if they’re within the margin of error. However, one candidate is not within the margin of error. Joe Biden is blowing Trump away. He has the moderate, blue-collar appeal that could win back the Rust Belt and give the suburban women uncomfortable with Trump a home in the Democratic Party. Every Democratic candidate will lose to Trump except for Biden, who would win in a blowout.
On Wednesday, Joe Biden received a family blessing: they support the former vice president entering the ring of presidential candidates. This brings Biden one step closer to making a critical decision about running, recently stating he is now “very close” to choosing.
But what would Biden be like if he ran and eventually won? Compared to most candidates in the fray, his record on the war on drugs is frankly alarming. In fact, he was one of the original framers of the drug war, and it appears that little has changed.
