Are We Being Rational About Mass Shootings?

gun control mass shooting rational
Peter Cooperson | Poland

Recently, two mass shootings occurred in the United States. However, despite the high level of emotions caused by footage from the scenes that saw the horrific murders happen, gun control policy should in no way be viewed as hot-headedly as it has been by the establishment. In fact, one can easily argue that the data itself carries a quite different message: actually, gun control is irrational.

Gun Control Is Dead, And So Is the Debate

gun control
Conner Drigotas | connerdrigotas.com

We live in a post gun control world, and most of us don’t even know it. The current debate over gun control is simply a waste of time. The modern gun ownership landscape is misunderstood by the lawmakers, and by most of the media discussing it. We all want to decrease gun violence, but it feels like the solutions are all the same.

In the wake of national tragedy in Texas and Ohio, we have seen more of the same talking points from all the same talking heads: Common sense gun control. Mandatory buyback programs. Red flag laws. Bans on assault weapons.

There are deep flaws in each of these, but more importantly, none of these are realistic. We need to look at other solutions because guns are here, and they are here to stay.

Ryan Lau and Indri Schaelicke | @RyanLau71R @ISchaelicke

Econintech is a libertarian think tank in Venezuela, one of the only of its kind. They were the first organization to promote Bitcoin as a means of helping combat hyperinflation and advocate for free markets and sound banking. I had the pleasure of interviewing Dr. Rafael Acevedo and Luis Cirocco, the founders of Econintech, alongside 71 Republic’s Vice President of Operations, Indri Schaelicke, at the Mises Institute in Auburn, Alabama. We discussed the roles of Bitcoin and gun control in the Venezuelan crisis, what Americans can do to help, and whether or not there is any glimmer of hope for the socialist country. A transcript (lightly edited for clarity) and audio file of the interview are both below.

Eric Swalwell Will Bomb Your Neighbor Over Handguns

James Sweet III | @jsweetIII

Eric Swalwell, a Democratic candidate for President, hates guns. The only thing he hates more than guns are people that refuse to hand guns over. In fact, his hatred for gun owners runs so deep that he’s willing to go to war over them, setting him apart from fellow advocates of an assault weapons ban. Not only is he willing to kill you over guns, but he is willing to level entire towns over “military-style semiautomatic assault weapons.” Yet, he thinks that the right to life is supreme, with every other right falling below it (unless you’re a fetus). As Democratic candidates struggle to find their breakout moment on a crowded debate stage, it shouldn’t be too hard for Swalwell to garner attention with his message of war, death, and pistols of mass destruction.

Thomas DiGennaro | @tom.digennaro

In 2013, the state of Colorado enacted a ban on magazines with a capacity of over 15 rounds. The sale, transfer, and possession of “large capacity magazines” became illegal. This legislation came in wake of the Aurora Theatre and Sandy Hook shooting. The state legislature passed this ban, which then-governor John Hickenlooper added his signature to. The ban became law on July 1st, 2013.
