Since its release last week, Joker brought in a record-breaking $96 million dollars in North America on its opening weekend. This tops previous record holder, Venom, which made $80 million dollars last October. Moreover, it has one of the highest-ranked opening weekends for an R-rated film.

Joker has earned this R-rating, containing mature themes, violent images, and heavy scenes. With this R-rating comes mass controversy in the film. Many have described the film as being “too violent” or “disturbing”. The real controversy is the worries about violent acts being inspired by the film.

Ghost Guns are the Solution to Restrictive Gun Control

America was struck this week with a hail storm of tragedy. This week there were three mass shootings- one in El Paso Texas, one in Dayton Ohio, and one in Gilroy California. The gunmen in these various crimes murdered, in all, at least 32 from the time of writing. So far in 2019 alone, there have been at least 17 deadly mass shootings in America. These bi-monthly cataclysms make America a unique figure amongst first world countries in the most shameful way possible. Among nations with gun control, America tops the list in the category of number mass shootings.

These murders and their following heartaches motivate people to enact restrictive gun legislation in the name of public safety. But this is not the answer. In today’s America, mass shootings are a very unfortunate reality. Each event a tragic stain on our history, it can be difficult to fathom exactly how to solve the problem. A pattern follows, and the country begins a discussion of solutions involving gun control, which some empirical data suggests will not work. Even then, however, we’re missing a critical cause of American deaths that kills even more people than mass shootings do: police brutality.
