Myanmar, a primarily Buddhist country formerly known as Burma, has been savagely murdering the Rohingya Muslims that live within its borders. The ethnic cleansing has been going on for years, and the persecution for decades.
Despite the fact that Myanmar’s Government is assisting extremist groups in an ethnic cleansing, the head of the state doesn’t even seem to care. Aung San Suu Kyi, the State Counsellor of Myanmar, has stated that she doesn’t consider it to be an ethnic cleansing and doesn’t even think of the Rohingya Muslims as an official ethnic group in Myanmar. It seems very irresponsible for the head of the state to ignore an ethnic cleansing within her own country, but the fact that she is a former recipient of a Nobel Peace Prize makes it even more convoluted.
Some citizens have done worse than pay no attention to the atrocities; they’ve joined in. The 969 Movement, a Buddhist extremist group, has fought hard to eliminate any Muslims in Myanmar. In fact, the actual reason the organization was founded was to stop the spread of Islam into Myanmar. Although the 969 Movement is technically a Buddhist group, the Dalai Lama has condemned them and called for them to stop their violence, in order “to bring about a peaceful resolution.”
Out of the total 1.1 million Rohingya Muslims that live in Myanmar, Morocco World News estimated that 400,000 have fled to Bangladesh. Some of the persecuted have chosen to stay and fight for a “democratic Muslim state for the Rohingya.” This group, known as the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army, was founded in 2016 to fight the oppressors. Their government has labeled them as “Bengali terrorists” and illegal immigrants. When Myanmar officially labeled the ARSA as a terrorist organization, they refuted the claim and said it was baseless.
This epidemic isn’t something that just started recently; the Human Rights Watch classified it as an ethnic cleansing in 2013. The senseless murder may not end soon since the head of state opposes the entry of UN officials.
