As Lucasfilms’ Star Wars: The Last Jedi hit it’s 4th week in theaters on Friday, the release of a sequel/spinoff of the 1995 original Jumanji movie caught the box office by storm.
While only earning a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes this 2-hour thrill ride has made quite the stir. As of Monday at 9:00 AM EST, the film had grossed $519,372,666 worldwide beating out other high budget blockbusters like Insidious: The Last Key and Pitch Perfect 3.
Many critics praised the entire cast for what was truly amazing acting. In my opinion, this was one of The Rock’s best performances in years.
For those unfamiliar with the general setup for this movie allow me to explain. A group of 4 very archetyped high school students find themselves together in detention. Upon finding what appears to be an old game console, the kids set up to play. But, as soon as the game begins, they are transported inside the game. With only 3 lives, the kids must not only deal with a change in environment but also one of in physical existence. This manifests when the kids appear in the game as the characters they selected to play, as opposed to themselves. This allows for great comedic moments and overall gives the actors so much to work with.
Dwayne Johnson plays Dr. Bravestone, the hero of the Jumanji video game. Inside Bravestone lies Spencer, a shy nerdy teenage boy. Faced with the challenge of helping his friends to escape the game, while dealing with this change, Spencer has quite the character arch. Johnson’s acting could not be more spot on in this area. His ability to show us a coming of age story while still delivering on the movies full comedic potential was amazing to watch.
