US Media Bias is the Worst In the World, According to Pew Research Center

According to a recent Pew study about the media and their biases in 38 nations worldwide, many numbers pointed to the US as the country with the most media bias. This may not come as a shock since US politics are divisive as ever.

The survey found that only 21% of Republicans find that the media is covering their party fairly. In contrast, Pew found that 55% of Democrats find that the media is covering their party fairly. The US was the only country in the study that found that the media did not support the governing party.

In regards to determining the “governing party” in the US, Pew said “In the U.S., this means that people who identify with the Republican Party, which currently controls all branches of the federal government, are considered governing party supporters. People who identify with the Democratic Party, say they are independent, identify with some other party or do not identify with any political party are categorized as nonsupporters.”

Regarding those numbers, Pew said “On the question of whether their news media cover political issues fairly, for example, partisan differences appear in 20 of the 38 countries surveyed. In five countries, the gap is at least 20 percentage points, with the largest by far in the U.S. at 34 percentage points.” This was 14 points more than any other country.

Most in the US would agree that the “big five” of news companies based in the US would have to be CNN, Fox, MSNBC, ABC News, and CBS. According to Media Bias/Fact Check, 2 of these websites, CNN and MSNBC, have a left-wing bias, ABC and CBS have a center-left bias, and Fox has a right-wing bias.

When it came to their factual reporting, CNN, MSNBC, and Fox were all given “Mixed” ratings. ABC and CBS were given ratings of “High”.

For those wondering, 71 Republic is given a slight right-center bias rating and has a factual reporting score of “High”. 71 Republic is closest to the center of all of the listed news sources thus far.

For comparison, BBC, the major news source for Great Britain is given a very small center-left bias rating but also a factual reporting bias rating of “Very High”.

This also shows a very important tendency. The five major US sources are showing a definite right or left bias. Why do people watch or read these? Because they want to be fed information that makes them feel better about their views. They would rather to their own opinion being fed back to them instead of going out and searching for the facts.
