A second dossier in the possession of the Federal Bureau of Investigation alleges that United States President Donald Trump was compromised during a trip to Russia in 2013 before he was president, corroborating events in the original Christopher Steele dossier released to the public in 2017, reports the Guardian.
Former MI6 intelligence agent Steele produced a dossier in 2016 that outlined misconduct and conspiracy made between Mr. Trump’s presidential campaign and Moscow before and during the election season.
A second, independent dossier was written by Cody Shearer, a former journalist close to the Clinton White House in the 1990s and a controversial political activist, according to an exclusive report from the Guardian newspaper.
The document may corroborate more information found the Steele Dossier.
Shearer’s memo was initially viewed with skepticism, partially due to sharing the sensitive document with certain media organizations previous to the 2016 election.
However, the FBI is investigating certain details in the so-called “Shearer memo”, with the Guardian reporting that the bureau is pursuing “intriguing leads.”
The United Kingdom-based newspaper cited a source saying that because the FBI was still working on the Shearer document suggests parts of the memo is being taken seriously.
Trump was allegedly compromised during a trip to Russia in 2013 when he was there for a Miss Universe pageant, gaining connections to wealthy and powerful Russians, apparently including to President Vladimir Putin.
The original dossier was produced as part of Democratic Party opposition research during the 2016 election season, with Fusion GPS continuing to fund Steele’s work after Trump was elected before handing it over to British and U.S. intelligence agencies.
While several news agencies knew of the document, Buzzfeed News was the first to release it in early January 2017.
The Steele dossier’s contents have not been all confirmed at this point.
This comes just hours before Mr. Trump is set to give the annual state-of-the union speech to Congress.
