Shutdown Confirmed: U.S. Senate Back In Session

The United States Senate adjourned for a recess until after midnight, confirming the federal government shutdown and the delay of a two-year bipartisan budget bill.

The recess was set until 12:01 a.m., with lawmakers breaking following an unexpected delay by Rand Paul just hours before the Senate was hoping to pass the bill and send it to the House of Representatives, where it would have been met with uncertainty.

It is the second time funding has run out for federal agencies, just weeks after a deadline was missed by Congress on Jan. 20 that pushed Washington agencies into a partial shutdown until the Tuesday after.
