(71 Republic) – Michael Cohen, former lawyer for the president of the United States, surrendered to the Federal Bureau of Investigation on Tuesday ahead of an afternoon court proceeding where federal prosecutors in New York disclosed a plea deal.
Investigators, spurred on as a symptom of Robert Mueller’s probe into alleged Russian meddling and Trump-Russia collusion, have been examining if Mr. Cohen committed bank and tax fraud or violated campaign finance laws.
Cohen pleaded guilty to multiple campaign finance violations, tax and bank fraud resulting in up to a multi-year jail sentence and a large fine, according to reports from U.S. media.
Cohen, Donald Trump’s former lawyer, admitted earlier this year to arranging “hush money” to the tune of a six-figure payment just before the 2016 presidential election to an adult film actress who was ready to reveal she had an affair with his then-client.
A plea agreement does not guarantee that Cohen will be sharing information relevant to other federal probes, such as the one being carried out by Robert Mueller, but he may be rewarded by prosecutors if he does.
It emerged on July that Cohen had made a secret recording of the president where they talk about a payment to a model who claims she had sex with Mr. Trump. The White House denies the claim.
Michael Cohen was a part of Donald Trump’s inner circle for over 10 years.
