Sunday afternoon, a post on Instagram cemented itself into the record books. Cracking the old mark that had stood for almost a year, this picture now has more likes than any other in history. The catch? The photo is simply of a plain, uncooked egg.
World Record Egg
The account, titled “world_record_egg“, posted a picture of a brown egg on January 4th. Just three days ago, it was struggling to make it to the 20,000 like mark. But yesterday, the account sent the Instagram community into a scramble. With shoutouts from countless accounts, personal and popular alike, the egg was sizzling hot, gaining millions of likes in an afternoon.
Still rising, the world record egg had one goal: beat the world record for Instagram likes. At that point in time, Kylie Jenner had the achievement. A picture of her newborn, Stormi Webster Jenner, racked up an impressive 18.3 million likes.
However, as the day wore on, world record egg kept gaining until it went over, easy.
As of approximately 3:00 PM EST Monday, the egg has gotten 33.4 million likes, nearly double that of Jenner’s February 4th post. Since breaking the record, world record egg has been verified on Instagram. The account now calls itself “EGG GANG”.
Following the accomplishment, many fans of the egg have fried Jenner’s post. Hundreds of comments with the egg emoji and remarks such as “lost to an egg” and “egg gang” have flooded the picture.
