Trump to Declare National Emergency

President Trump has confirmed that he will indeed declare a national emergency to fund a border wall.

A National Emergency

This announcement has come a day after Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell announced that Trump will sign a federal funding bill to prevent another government shutdown. However, Trump was not happy with this agreement. It only gave $1.4 billion for border security, merely a fifth of the 5.7 billion he requested.

The President stated that past presidents have signed national emergencies. As a result, that precedent allows him to indeed declare an emergency.

“I’m going to be signing a national emergency, and it’s been signed many times before. It’s been signed by other presidents from 1977 or so it gave the presidents the power, there’s rarely been a problem. They sign it, nobody cares. I guess they weren’t very exciting”.

Trump justifies the border situation as a crisis by stating that there is “an invasion of our country with drugs, with human traffickers, with all types of criminals and gangs”. Moreover, he asserts that this is indeed a crisis that the country must address. Furthermore, he states that the United States does not “control [its] own border”.

Trump plans to use the national emergency powers to allocate $8 billion of government funds for border security.
