Earlier today, Beto O’Rourke, a three-term congressman from El Paso, announced that he will join the presidential race. In a text message to a local El Paso news station, Beto O’Rourke confirmed that he will be running for President in 2020.
As a result of his record-breaking grassroots-funded campaign against Ted Cruz and his narrow defeat in the midterms, he gained national recognition through his publicly funded campaign where he visited every county in Texas in an effort to win the Senate seat. Beto was able to draw thousands of non-voters to the polls and evidently turn Texas from red to purple.
He is a candidate of the people, and that will benefit him greatly in the race.
Running against a variety of progressive candidates will prove tough for Beto. However, his charisma and ability to connect with the people provided him with a record-breaking amount of support in his 2018 senate race.
This announcement comes after months of anticipation, and he will become a game changer in the democratic primaries. Beto was able to raise a record-breaking $80 million in his effort to unseat Republican incumbent Ted Cruz, and he already has a grassroots campaign dubbed “Draft Beto” to give him a jumpstart in his 2020 campaign.
The GOP has already recognized the threat Beto poses and filmed a political advertisement attacking him days before any official announcement was released.
